About Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes and reduces the size of the labia minora to improve comfort and enhance the appearance of the vulva. (1) It is important to understand that the vulva naturally varies widely in shape, size, and color; there is no single ideal or “perfect” appearance. Some women have labia minora that are naturally tucked within the outer labia (labia majora), while others have labia that extend beyond them. Labiaplasty can help alleviate physical discomfort such as irritation, tugging, or chafing caused by elongated or asymmetrical labia, while also addressing aesthetic concerns if desired.
When Should I Consider Labiaplasty?
As a surgical procedure, undergoing labiaplasty can be a difficult decision. However, refined, advanced techniques make it safe and effective while minimizing patient downtime. Still, many women are unsure if they require labiaplasty. If your labia minora are enlarged or significantly extend outward, labiaplasty may benefit you. (2) Additionally, if your labia are a source of discomfort, whether that be emotional or physical, labiaplasty can also be an effective solution. (2) Ultimately, if you are considering labiaplasty, the best way to explore how you will benefit is to attend a consultation with Dr. Zarrabi, which you can schedule by submitting our online contact form or by calling our Santa Monica or Beverly Hills offices at (310) 584-9990.
Benefits
Undergoing labiaplasty can yield benefits such as:
- Enhanced Aesthetic Appearance: Patients often seek labiaplasty to address asymmetry and to refine the appearance of their genitalia.
- Increased Comfort: By reducing excess tissue, patients can improve their personal and daily comfort when performing physical activities or engaging in sexual intercourse.
- Greater Sense of Confidence: Many women often experience increased self-esteem after seeing and experiencing the improved aesthetics and comfort resulting from their procedure.
- Better Clothing Fit: Many women find it easier and more comfortable to wear tighter-fitting or more revealing clothing without feeling self-conscious about their labia.
- Customizable Results: The procedure can be tailored to fit each patient’s specific needs, ensuring personalized outcomes.
Ideal Candidates
All patients interested in labiaplasty should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about what they can achieve. During a consultation, Dr. Zarrabi will determine each patient’s candidacy.
Ideal candidates for labiaplasty include those with concerns about their elongated or enlarged labia. Women interested in undergoing labiaplasty also seek to address asymmetry or to reduce the size of their clitoral hood. Patients seeking to rejuvenate their intimate area after childbirth may also be suitable candidates for this procedure.
Personal Consultation
Each patient at Zarrabi Plastic Surgery is asked to attend a personal consultation at either our Beverly Hills or Santa Monica office before undergoing their treatment. During this consultation, Dr. Zarrabi will meet with the patient to explain their options.
This information is then used to determine each patient’s candidacy for labiaplasty and to establish their personalized procedure plan. Once a plan is formed, preparation and recovery instructions will be provided. We encourage each patient to prepare and ask as many questions as they please, as our team is here to help and support them throughout their entire process.

Procedure
Each patient’s procedure will begin with either the administration of general anesthesia or IV sedation with a topical anesthetic to ensure each individual is comfortable throughout the procedure. Dr. Zarrabi will perform labiaplasty using either the trim technique or the wedge technique.
- Trim Technique: The trim technique, or trim resection labiaplasty, involves Dr. Zarrabi neatly trimming excess tissue from the edges of the labia before closing the incisions using sutures. This technique offers several benefits, such as a shorter surgical time, but may not be recommended for patients with darker skin tones. (3)
- Wedge Technique: The wedge technique is another labiaplasty technique that maintains the natural edges of the labia. This technique involves excising a V-shaped wedge from the center of the labia minora. (3) The labia are then reshaped before the incisions are closed. This technique is often performed on patients with triangular-shaped tissue or those with labia that extend beyond the labia majora (outer vaginal lips). This technique is not ideal, however, for patients interested in addressing discolored labia. (1)
Recovery
Each patient will receive a set of post-treatment instructions during their personal consultation. These instructions will vary from patient to patient, but should be followed for the best results and quickest recovery.
Labiaplasty Recovery
Labiaplasty is performed on an outpatient basis, which means each individual will be released home to continue recovering. Many patients can walk shortly after their treatment, but it is strongly recommended to rest and recover for the time being.
It is common for individuals to experience swelling or bruising in the treated area, but these effects are temporary and may be managed using pain medications. Patients should avoid putting pressure on the treatment area and refrain from using swimming pools or taking baths. Engaging in sexual activities or using tampons should be avoided until fully healed.
Results
Labiaplasty is associated with high patient satisfaction rates. (4) After undergoing labiaplasty, many women notice a significant improvement in their daily comfort, aesthetic appearance, and sexual satisfaction. (4) The results of labiaplasty can last for years to come, although normal aging will continue to affect the tissues.

FAQ
What are the risks associated with labiaplasty?
As with any procedure, risks can include infection, excessive bleeding, or dissatisfaction with the results. All risks can be discussed during the consultation phase. Choosing a board-certified surgeon, such as Dr. Zarrabi, can greatly minimize these risks.
Does labiaplasty hurt?
We ensure each patient’s comfort during the procedure by using anesthesia. Discomfort during recovery afterwards can usually be managed using pain medications and is typically considered to be tolerable.
How long will the effects of labiaplasty last?
The effects of labiaplasty are designed to be long-lasting and can last for several years. However, the processes of aging, significant weight changes, or subsequent pregnancies can alter the area over time.
What is the usual recovery time for labiaplasty?
Recovery times will vary between patients, but most patients can typically return to their normal activities within one to two weeks.
Can I combine labiaplasty with other procedures?
Yes, patients are more than welcome to incorporate labiaplasty into larger treatment plans to address multiple concerns at the same time.
Will I need a wedge labiaplasty or a trim labiaplasty?
The technique used for your labiaplasty will depend on your goals and anatomical considerations. During your consultation, Dr. Zarrabi will examine your labia and determine which technique will be best.
Is it okay if I get pregnant after a labiaplasty?
We recommend that you wait until after you have recovered from your pregnancy to undergo labiaplasty, as childbirth can alter the results.
