Understanding the benefits of both Botox and brow lifts is key to making informed cosmetic decisions. Both of these treatments can refresh the upper face and create a smoother, more youthful look. However, one is a simple injection, and the other is a more extensive surgical procedure. The best procedure for you will depend on the extent of your concerns and your goals for long-term results, recovery time, and overall facial rejuvenation.
Led by board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Michael Zarrabi, Zarrabi Plastic Surgery has helped many patients achieve beautiful results with personalized treatments designed to address signs of aging. Sherry Sanvictores, MSN, ACNP-BC, is a nurse practitioner who performs all injections at Zarrabi Plastic Surgery.

About Botox
Botox is an injectable neuromodulator that can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by limiting muscle contractions. Botox works by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter that is responsible for muscle contractions. As we age, repetitive muscle movements wear on the skin, and fine lines and wrinkles can form around the eyes, between the eyebrows, and on the forehead. Relaxing the underlying muscles can diminish wrinkles in these areas and—with regular treatments—potentially prevent new ones from forming.
Botox remains one of the most popular injectables for nonsurgical facial rejuvenation. In 2023, more than 4.7 million Botox treatments were performed on patients throughout the U.S. (1) Botox is FDA-approved for several areas, including the crow’s feet at the outer corners of the eyes, the forehead, and in between the brows. (2)
During a Botox treatment, nurse injector Sherry Sanvictores will administer the formula into a few predetermined injection sites, specifically targeting the muscles that contribute to wrinkling.
Botox vs. Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are frequently used in conjunction with Botox to help address signs of aging, but they work differently. Instead of targeting muscles, dermal fillers enhance volume in the targeted areas. Our practice offers several different dermal filler options to replace lost volume and contour the face.
About Brow Lifts
Droopy brows and wrinkled forehead skin can contribute to a tired, aged appearance. (3) A brow lift (forehead lift) is a surgical procedure that removes droopy skin from the forehead, smoothing wrinkles and elevating the brows to rejuvenate your upper face.
During a brow lift, Dr. Zarrabi will make a discreet incision along your hairline, allowing access to the underlying structures. He will then lift and tighten the tissues and remove excess tissue to create a natural, refreshed appearance.
Brow Lift vs. Eyelid Lift
While a brow lift addresses the forehead and eyebrows, an eyelid lift addresses the upper and/or lower eyelids to rejuvenate the eye area. Sagging tissue on the upper eyelids can contribute to an aged look, and sagging skin and bulging fat pads beneath the eyes can also create a tired appearance. In some cases, sagging skin above the eyes can somewhat obstruct your field of vision. While a brow lift and eyelid lift are both designed to enhance the upper third of the face, an eyelid lift is necessary if one wants to address a more extensive degree of sagging above or below the eyes. A brow lift may result in a subtle lift above the eyes, but it cannot be a replacement for the upper eyelid lift.
Candidates
Candidacy for either Botox or a brow lift differs quite significantly. The method that may be more effective for you will depend on your goals and the degree of sagging or wrinkling present.
Botox Candidates
Patients who simply want to address wrinkles and fine lines on the forehead, the outer corners of the eyes, or between the eyebrows may see the results they want with Botox injections. Patients receiving Botox injections should be comfortable with the idea of a temporary solution, as the results of the injections wear off after about 3-4 months. Patients who want to see more enduring results, or who are undergoing Botox as a form of preventative rejuvenation, or ‘prejuvenation,’ will be eligible for reinjection after the results of their last treatment have worn off.
Brow Lift Candidates
Candidates for a brow lift are typically those who have more extensive wrinkling in the upper face, as well as a significant degree of sagging. These are often patients who would not be able to achieve substantial results with Botox alone, as the injectable is not capable of addressing sagging or excess skin.
Prospective patients should be in good overall health. Patients should also have realistic expectations about what they can achieve with the treatment they choose. Each patient’s candidacy will ultimately be determined during a personal consultation at our office.
Consultation
The best way to determine the best forehead rejuvenation option for you is to schedule a personal consultation. At this appointment, your specialist will examine your skin, looking specifically at wrinkles and fine lines, fat distribution, skin laxity, and more. They will ask about your aesthetic goals, explore your medical history, and explain what options are available to you. With all of the necessary information collected, we will create an effective, individualized treatment plan.
If you are interested in addressing other concerns or if your results would be better achieved with alternative or additional procedures, you can explore these options at this time. You are encouraged to speak openly about your goals, as this meeting is time dedicated to making sure you feel confident about your treatment and understand what to expect.

Corresponding Procedures
Both Botox and a brow lift are aimed at rejuvenating the upper regions of the face. For patients who have concerns in other facial areas, we may recommend these other procedures for more comprehensive rejuvenation.
Facelift
A facelift is a procedure that removes excess skin and lifts underlying tissues in the mid and lower face to diminish signs of aging. It can address sagging cheeks, deep nasolabial folds, and jowls for a more youthful contour. Results are long-lasting and can be combined with other procedures, like a neck lift, for more comprehensive rejuvenation.
Facial Fat Transfer
A facial fat transfer restores volume to key areas with your own fat. During this procedure, fat is taken from one area of the body with liposuction and reinjected into the face. This natural approach enhances areas like the cheeks, under-eyes, and temples with subtle, lasting results.

FAQ
How do I know if Botox or a brow lift is right for me?
We will examine your wrinkles and skin laxity to guide you toward the best treatment for your concerns. For severely droopy brows, a brow lift is usually more effective, while Botox may be better suited for mild to moderate wrinkles, not skin laxity.
Is a brow lift painful?
During a brow lift, anesthesia is administered for your comfort. After the surgery, it is normal to experience discomfort as you heal; following aftercare instructions and pain management directions will help you experience a smooth recovery.
Is Botox painful?
No, Botox is not typically considered painful. We can administer a local anesthetic before the treatment to ensure your comfort.
When can I resume my regular activities after a brow lift?
After a brow lift, you will need 1-2 weeks of downtime while you heal. Most patients can return to light and normal activities at this time, but more strenuous activities and exercise should be avoided until your surgeon approves.
When can I return to my regular activities after Botox?
After receiving Botox injections, you can return to most normal activities immediately, with certain precautions outlined by your injector.
How long does a brow lift take?
A brow lift can take 1-2 hours, depending on the extent of the treatment.
