Rhinoplasty is a procedure that reshapes the nose to improve its appearance and/or address functional concerns. Understanding the difference between a surgical rhinoplasty and a liquid rhinoplasty is important. While a surgical rhinoplasty alters the underlying structure of the nose to achieve results, (1) a liquid rhinoplasty reshapes the nose with injectables (dermal fillers) without requiring general anesthesia or a lengthy recovery period, making it more accessible and safer for those interested in revitalizing the appearance of their nose. If you are interested in undergoing a liquid rhinoplasty, our dedicated team at Zarrabi Plastic Surgery can help you achieve your nasal goals. About Surgical Rhinoplasty vs Liquid Rhinoplasty
Understanding the differences between surgical and liquid rhinoplasty is one of the first steps to determining the most effective procedure for your aesthetic goals.
Liquid Rhinoplasty
A liquid rhinoplasty, also referred to as a non-surgical rhinoplasty, is a procedure designed to alter the aesthetic appearance of the nose without the use of incisions. Liquid rhinoplasty can improve the appearance of the nasal tip and address mild asymmetry, depending on the patient’s nasal anatomy. This procedure has gained significant popularity due to its high safety profile and effective nasal recontouring without the risks, cost, or recovery time associated with surgical rhinoplasty. Our team is highly skilled at performing liquid rhinoplasties and can utilize a number of different injection techniques to achieve each patient’s desired results.
Surgical Rhinoplasty
A surgical rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure designed to reshape and restructure the nose and its underlying components. This procedure can be performed to address both functional and aesthetic concerns, and many patients seek this procedure to improve the shape or size of their nose, address breathing concerns, and correct any congenital anomalies or trauma sustained from injury. However, surgical rhinoplasties are also more invasive procedures, requiring more downtime and increasing the risk of complications.
Benefits of Liquid Rhinoplasty
We offer liquid rhinoplasties at Zarrabi Plastic Surgery to help enhance each patient’s natural beauty. After undergoing a liquid rhinoplasty, there are a variety of benefits that patients can enjoy, which include:
- Non-Surgical Solution: Patients can see significant results without the use of incisions or having to undergo a lengthy recovery.
- Reduced Complications: There are many risks associated with undergoing a traditional rhinoplasty due to its surgical nature; however, liquid rhinoplasties significantly reduce the chances of complications, making it a safer procedure to undergo.
- Minimal Recovery Time: As there is essentially no downtime associated with liquid rhinoplasties, patients are free to return to their daily schedules immediately after their appointment.
- Immediate Results: Unlike a surgical rhinoplasty, the patient can experience the full effects of their procedure as soon as it is finished.
- Adjustable Enhancements: If a patient wishes to modify their results, adjustments can be made through additional injections.
- Improved Facial Balance: Reshaping the nose can enhance proportionality with other facial features.
- Enhanced Self-Esteem: Patients often report increased self-esteem and enhanced confidence after experiencing the results of their procedure.
- Dorsal Hump Reduction: Removing prominent bumps on the nose can lead to a smoother nasal contour.
- Tip Refinement: Adjustments made to the tip of one’s nose can help improve the overall balance and aesthetics of the face.
At Zarrabi Plastic Surgery, we offer liquid rhinoplasties to help each individual enhance their appearance and confidence. To learn more about how you can benefit from our liquid rhinoplasty procedure, please call (310) 584-9990 or contact us online.
Ideal Candidates for Liquid Rhinoplasty
Suitable candidates for a liquid rhinoplasty include those seeking ways to enhance the aesthetic appearance of their nose without incisions or an extensive recovery period. Patients interested in a liquid rhinoplasty may also be interested in more subtle, natural-looking results or looking to correct more mild to moderate concerns.
All candidates interested in our liquid rhinoplasty procedure should be in good overall health, free from any underlying medical conditions that may inhibit healing. Realistic expectations should also be held regarding what this procedure may accomplish. Our team will determine each patient’s candidacy during their personal consultation.
Personal Consultation
The first step towards enhancing the appearance of the nose begins with a personal consultation. Our team will ask the patient a series of questions regarding their current medications, medical history, concerns, and treatment goals. Our team will discuss what the liquid rhinoplasty procedure encompasses and what makes this procedure a safer and more effective option in comparison to surgical intervention.
This meeting allows our team to create a personalized plan tailored to each patient’s goals. Patients are encouraged to prepare questions and voice their concerns, as communication is vital. We want to ensure each patient feels informed and comfortable before undergoing treatment.

Preparation
While there are similarities, the preparation required for a surgical rhinoplasty is slightly different than the preparation required for a liquid rhinoplasty. Liquid rhinoplasties generally require less preparation compared to surgical rhinoplasties. For both procedures, patients may be asked to temporarily stop taking certain medications and/or supplements that contain blood-thinning properties. Patients should also avoid using nicotine and consuming alcohol before the treatment. Patients should arrive with a clean face, free of makeup or skincare products, on the day of their procedure. Our nurse injector will provide further specific instructions to help you prepare for your liquid rhinoplasty procedure.
Procedure
We will cleanse your skin at the beginning of your procedure. Patients should arrive without makeup or skincare products.
Liquid Rhinoplasty
During a liquid rhinoplasty, we can apply a topical numbing cream to the treatment area to help minimize any potential discomfort. There may also be a numbing agent in the filler, depending on the brand and formula used during the procedure. From there, your qualified aesthetic provider will administer the dermal fillers. They can use the injectable formulas to refine the tip of the nose, smooth out the dorsal hump, and/or enhance the symmetry of the nasal bridge. The targeted injection areas will be predetermined at each patient’s consultation. (2)
Recovery
Recovery time will vary among patients, but most can expect to experience bruising, tenderness, and mild swelling at the treatment sites. These effects are temporary and will subside on their own. Patients who receive a liquid rhinoplasty will be able to return to their daily routines soon after their appointment, as there is no associated extensive downtime. However, patients will need to avoid touching or putting pressure on their noses, in addition to avoiding wearing glasses.
Patients who choose to undergo surgical rhinoplasties often need to take several weeks away from work and other social activities to rest and focus on their recovery, which can cause disruptions within their professional and personal lives. They may experience postoperative nausea due to the use of anesthesia, with 80% of high-risk patients and 30% of the general population experiencing these effects. (3) Patients will also need to avoid physical activities and strenuous tasks for several weeks. The inconvenience of recovery further demonstrates why many patients have turned to liquid rhinoplasties to improve their aesthetic appearance. Our team will discuss any further post-operative instructions with each individual during their personal consultation.
Results
While results are often visible immediately after a liquid rhinoplasty, mild swelling or bruising may temporarily affect the appearance of the nose. Results are temporary, meaning patients will have to schedule follow-up appointments to maintain the effects of their treatment. One of the many upsides of undergoing a liquid rhinoplasty is the reliability of the results and the potential to dissolve the hyaluronic acid in the case of dissatisfaction.
Patients who received a surgical rhinoplasty can enjoy natural-looking improvements in the shape and profile of their nose, as well as a more harmonious facial balance. With surgical rhinoplasties, however, the interaction between the different bones, cartilage, skin, and tissue within the nose leaves room for complications to occur. Approximately 10% of surgical rhinoplasty patients experience breathing concerns after their procedure, and implant extrusion rates can range between 4.8% to 20.8%. Fluid-filled cysts, also known as subcutaneous mucosal cysts, are also a frequent effect as a result of surgical rhinoplasty. (4)

FAQ
What is the difference between a surgical rhinoplasty and a liquid rhinoplasty?
A surgical rhinoplasty alters the bone and cartilage structure of the nose, while a liquid rhinoplasty uses dermal fillers to reshape the nose.
Can a liquid rhinoplasty replace a surgical rhinoplasty?
While a liquid rhinoplasty is a great alternative, it cannot fully replace the effects of a traditional rhinoplasty.
How long will my recovery be after my surgical or liquid rhinoplasty?
Recovery will vary from patient to patient, but those receiving a liquid rhinoplasty can often return to their routines immediately, while patients receiving a surgical rhinoplasty can often return to work within a week.
Are the results of either a liquid or surgical rhinoplasty reversible?
A liquid rhinoplasty can be reversed if hyaluronic acid fillers are used; however, the results of a surgical rhinoplasty are permanent and can only be altered with another procedure, resulting in increased costs and nasal trauma.
Can I combine my liquid rhinoplasty with another procedure for more comprehensive results?
Yes, both variations of rhinoplasty can be performed in conjunction with another procedure for more transformative results. Please reach out to either our Beverly Hills or Santa Monica offices for more information.
